The City of Yarra is committed to preserving the trees in its suburbs. Tree removal and pruning applications nearly always require a permit before any tree works are commenced. Significant trees always require a permit for pruning.
If your property is located within the City of Yarra, and meets the following criteria, it is considered a significant tree.
It is very difficult to apply for a permit to remove a tree and the council is guided by their tree removal guidelines. Usually, only trees that are dead, dying, dangerous or proven to be causing property damage will be considered for removal. Removal is usually the last option and only considered when other options to rectify the concern have been exhausted. You are allowed to cut any branches that hang over your property line as long as you do not damage the tree further. However, you are still required to conform to Yarra City council tree laws if the overhanging tree is a significant tree.
