Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need to apply for permits to remove the trees on my construction site?

We can attend your site and conduct an evaluation of all the trees. We'll check to see if your trees are protected under the local council's tree protection and vegetation overlays. If they are, we'll help you with the application process.

Do I need a permit to remove dead trees on my building site or only trees that are native and protected?

Yes, you will need a permit to remove most trees on your construction site; however, they are not required if the tree is dead.

Protected native and exotic trees may require additional permits and consultations with the local council before you can have them removed. We can attend your site and assess the situation for you.

If we use Trav’s Tree Services for cutting trees for construction site preparation, will you also clean up the area when you are finished?

Yes, we will mulch and remove all leftover trees and debris after completing the job. We pride ourselves on leaving our job sites even cleaner than we found them!

What happens if one of your arborists has an accident while on-site?

Every employee in our team has an up-to-date first aid certificate, and carry first aid kits with them to every job. Everyone is also fully covered by WorkSafe, and we hold full public liability insurance, so your site and equipment are protected.

Should I remove trees close to my house?

While it may be tempting to remove the trees whose roots are causing damage to your home, it's important to remember the benefits they provide. Extracting the tree from the ground can lead to instability in the area and even contribute to erosion.

Having said that, we’re here to help. If you would like to remove trees in readiness for a new build, give us a call, and we’ll do our best to clear the area as much as possible.

If you have questions about whether a particular tree should be removed, consult our friendly team.

How close to an existing tree can I build?

You can build as close as you want to an existing tree if you do not damage or destroy it. Building too close can cause damage to the tree's root system, canopy, or both. Additionally, building construction can create noise and dangerous pollution that can harm or even kill nearby plant life.

If you are unsure how close you can build to a particular tree, consult an arborist.

What trees can be cut down without permission Victoria?

In Victoria, you don't need a permit to remove the following types of trees:

  • Dead trees
  • Trees that are less than 5 metres high and have a trunk diameter of less than 10 cm
  • Trees in your backyard that are not protected by a local council tree protection or vegetation overlay
  • Street trees that are not protected by a local council tree protection or vegetation overlay
