Trees and parks in Glen Eira are highly valued and protected by the council however they currently do not have any general laws for tree removal on private property. Regardless, you still need to check with the council before removing a tree as your site may sit in an Overlay.

There are three Overlays in Glen Eira council area:

  • Significant Landscape Overlay — This control conserves and enhances the character of existing landscapes. A planning permit is required to remove, destroy or lop a specified tree or to construct a building or carry out works in areas specified as tree protection zones.
  • Vegetation Protection Overlay — This area contains Glen Eira’s only remaining significant remnant indigenous plant community. Swamp Gums and River Red Gums are protected in this area.
  • Heritage Overlay tree control —  In these cases, a planning permit is required to remove, destroy or lop a tree.
