Applying for a tree removal permit in Port Phillip council

You will need to apply for a permit if you wish to remove or prune a tree that is labelled as significant.

A significant tree is a tree or palm on private land:

  • With a trunk circumference of 150 centimetres or greater measured 1 metre from the base;
  • A multi-stemmed tree where the circumference of its exterior stems equals or is greater than 1.5 metres when measured 1 metre from its base; or
  • If the tree has been removed, a trunk circumference of 150 centimetres or greater measured at its base.

If you would like to remove or prune a tree that is classified as significant, you can apply for a significant tree permit. You will need to submit an application form and pay the free, include a site plan or drawing of the tree's location and provide photographs or diagrams outlining the proposed extent of pruning or removal.

Are there any exemptions to requiring a permit before pruning a significant tree?

You will not require a permit if you are pruning a tree whose branches are overhanging that adjacent land including a neighbouring property, footpath or the road. It is important that you keep photographic evidence of the tree before pruning as evidence of the obstruction.
