Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to remove trees in Canterbury?

The City of Boroondarra may require you to apply for a permit to remove, prune or do works near a tree, if the tree is:

  • in a Significant Landscape Overlay (SLO)
  • in a Vegetation Protection Overlay (VPO)
  • in a Heritage Overlay (HO)
  • on a property that’s over 4000 m2.

If there is an overlay on a property, it means there are special features that need to be protected or managed carefully. You can check with the Boroondarra Planning Scheme if you would like to remove a tree in Canterbury.

How do I know if a tree is protected by local laws?

You can find out if a tree is protected by local laws by checking the council's significant tree register. Generally, canopy trees, and significant trees are protected by Boroondarra council.

Canopy trees have a circumference of:

  • 110cm or more, measured at 1.5m above ground level; or
  • 150cm or more at ground level.

Significant trees are determined by an impressive size, age, rarity, ecological value, or cultural and historical significance. They may be one single tree or a row of trees on public or private land.

Can I prune a tree on my site?

Even if your tree is located on private property, you may still need a permit for pruning. We can help you apply for a permit from the council before completing tree works on your site.

What happens if I remove a protected tree?

The maximum penalty for removing a protected tree is $2000 and the council may choose to prosecute the matter in the Magistrates Court. It's best to get in touch for a free assessment to avoid a penalty.
