Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a tree removed in Richmond?

The Yarra City Council uses their Tree Removal Guide as a framework to assess whether a tree can be removed or not. Trees in Richmond are assessed on the condition, suitability, landscape value and significance. A written report must be prepared prior to any tree removal and be signed off by the Council’s Director City Strategy and Services under delegated authority from Council.

If you need help applying for tree removal in Richmond, let us know and we can do the hard work for you.

What is a significant tree?

The City of Yarra maintains a register of significant trees that have horticultural, aesthetic, historical, environmental, social or cultural value, and are located on public land and private properties. Only trees that are dead, dying, dangerous or proven to be causing property damage will be considered for removal. These significant tree are only removed when all other options to rectify the concern have been exhausted.

A Significant Tree Permit is required to conduct any major works on a tree within this register. The application for a significant tree permit includes:

  • Application fee: $155 (non refundable)
  • Significant tree permit – removal: $220
  • Significant tree permit – pruning only: $111

Removal of a significant tree may result in an infringement or prosecution.

Do you need a permit to prune trees?

You can prune your tree without a council permit if the branches are dead, dying, structurally unsound or disrupting powerlines, roofing, or gutters. According to the council's local laws, an owner or occupier of private land must not allow a tree, shrub, hedge or other vegetation to encroach on Council Land, a road or footway at a height less than 2.4 metres from the surface of the road, Council Land or footway.
